A Message From Pastor Mike
Updated: May 22, 2020
Psalm 62 is one of my favorite Psalms. It is a Psalm that has application for any struggle or
situation that you face. Even though it was written thousands of years ago, it is relevant for
today, May 17, 2020.
The backstory for this Psalm is found in 2 Samuel 15.
King David is enduring a revolt that is being led by his own son Absalom. Absalom is seeking to forcefully ascend his father's throne. Absalom not only desires his fathers throne but also his father’s life. David is afraid. He is uncertain about what the future holds for him. Will he
lose his job, his family, his country or his life? In a situation like this you may think that
David would have been bitter, angry or questioning God… but if you closely examine his response you will find that David uses this occasion to sing praises unto the Lord! Let’s take a few moments and examine why David could be so confident in this situation.
Psalm 62: 1-8
A Calm Resolve to Wait for the Salvation of God
To the Chief Musician. To Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.
Truly my soul silently waits for God; From Him comes my salvation.
He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense;
I shall not be greatly moved.
How long will you attack a man?
You shall be slain, all of you,
Like a leaning wall and a tottering fence.
They only consult to cast him down from his high position; They delight in lies;
They bless with their mouth, But they curse inwardly.
My soul, wait silently for God alone, For my expectation is from Him.
He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense;
I shall not be moved.
In God is my salvation and my glory; The rock of my strength,
And my refuge, is in God.
Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.
1. Wait
The first thing that you may notice is that David waits for God. The New International version (NIV) says, “Truly my soul finds rest in God.” There is an implied confidence in waiting on God because He will provide a solution. He will bring an answer to the uncertainty that we face. So we rest confidently in the knowledge that, “we know that in all things God
works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his
purpose.”
Romans 8:28
2. Wait Silently
The next silently thing that we notice is that we are to wait silently. It is difficult to wait silently. I believe that this means more than keeping our mouth shut from complaining or whining about our circumstances. While that most certainly applies, I believe that it also means to quiet our hearts and minds. To not be anxious or worry about things that we cannot control or that may never happen. David assures us that not only is God our provider but he is also our protector.
He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved.
3. Wait Silently for God alone
In verses 3 and 4, David makes it clear that he cannot place his trust in man. He doesn’t know who he can trust or believe. He cannot truly know their motives or be confident of their intentions or loyalty. Therefore, he waits for God alone. God alone is our provider, protector, and defender.
Who do you look to when you are in trouble? Where is the first place that you turn? The reality is that the government, medicine, financial institutions, education or social media cannot save us. God alone is our provider, protector, and defender. God may use those things as a means of providing, protecting and defending but we cannot place our faith and trust in them. The sad reality is that we cannot trust those institutions to be completely honest or trustworthy. Like David, we cannot truly know their motives or be confident of their intentions or loyalty. Only God is trustworthy.
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Jeremiah 29:11 NIV
This does not mean that we will escape trials or hardship, suffering or pain. We live in a fallen word and the world will let us down. We will let others down. We will disappoint and be disappointed. We will sin and be sinned against. Jesus said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33
4. Wait silently for God alone, For my expectation is from Him
David makes it very clear that his hope and expectation is in God alone. His faith is not in
anything or anyone else. In verse 8 he gives us some good advice.
Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.
So in the face of these uncertain and troubling times, let us turn to God alone. Trust in God
alone, and talk to God alone. Perhaps you may want to take some time and fast from the news and social media and listen to God alone.
